Rural Training Events on Best Practices for Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Physical Activity Counselling

This training opportunity is for health and exercise professionals working in rural or remote communities in British Columbia who want to improve their counselling skills to promote physical activity among clients with SCI.

What will you learn in this training?

The training aims to teach you how to use the best practices for SCI physical activity counselling in conversations with adults with SCI. The best practices focus on how to have a conversation and what to discuss during a conversation about physical activity with clients with a spinal cord injury (SCI). The training uses a holistic and relational approach in which we value different types of knowledge and expertise. This training will also connect you with other rural health and exercise professionals interested in working with people with SCI.

The training will consist of the following sessions::

  • Session 1: Zoom meeting on Tuesday, February 10, from 12:00–1:00 PM
  • Session 2: Zoom meeting on Saturday, February 28, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM
  • Session 3: Zoom meeting on Saturday, March 7, from 10:00 AM–12:00 PM

In addition to the live sessions, you will have access to a self-guided, online training resource.

After completing this training, you will be able to:

  1. Acknowledge the diverse physical activity experiences of people with SCI and recognize their unique journeys and stories.
  2. Describe and apply the best practices for physical activity counselling and know how to use them in your conversations with adults with SCI.
  3. Integrate self-reflection into your skills to monitor the use of the best practices and continuously improve your counselling abilities.
  4. Connect and collaborate with other rural professionals interested in working with people with SCI.
